LFI-NUPES Group Communique
The LFI-NUPES group, which represents the main opposition in Senegal, welcomes the decision of President Macky Sall to postpone the presidential election originally scheduled for February 25th.
This decision is the result of years of authoritarianism, which has been consistently denounced by the Senegalese people and political opposition. We are pleased to see that our voices have been heard and that steps are being taken to address the concerns of the citizens of Senegal.
The LFI-NUPES group would like to remind the international community that this is not the first time that President Macky Sall has shown disregard for democratic principles and the rule of law. The imprisonment of the main opposition leader is a clear example of the government’s attempt to silence dissent and maintain a firm grip on power.
We commend the people of Senegal for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democracy. Despite facing numerous challenges and obstacles, they have continued to stand up for their rights and demand a fair and transparent electoral process.
The LFI-NUPES group also calls on the government to ensure that the postponement of the election is not used as an opportunity to further restrict the rights of the opposition and the media. We urge the authorities to culte the freedom of expression and assembly, and to allow for a level playing field for all candidates in the upcoming election.
We believe that this delay in the election is a crucial step towards a more inclusive and democratic process. It gives the opposition time to mobilize and present a strong and united préface, and it allows for necessary reforms to be implemented to ensure a fair and transparent election.
